Which PBTs are targeted in this project?

INFORM is targeting the chemicals listed in an EPA document called the "Draft RCRA Waste Minimization List of Persistent, Bioaccumulative, and Toxic Chemicals," published in November 1998. The EPA has announced its intention to use this list to focus attention on these chemicals, in order to reduce their presence in hazardous waste by 50 percent by 2005. Because INFORM's research has found that more than 90% of these chemicals are leaving factories in consumer and industrial products, our project aims to exceed the EPA's goal by promoting PBT-free purchasing practices that will spur manufacturers to eliminate the use of these chemicals altogether.

More information how EPA's list was developed is available from the EPA at http://www.epa.gov/epaoswer/hazwaste/minimize/chemlist.htm.

The draft list of PBTs (in PDF format; readable with Adobe Acrobat) currently consists of 53 chemicals.
