Q: Worldwide, which source of renewable energy produces the most electricity?
Answer: 3
Hydroelectric power uses the force of falling or flowing water to produce electricity. It is the most abundant renewable energy source, having generated 777 gigawatts (GW) of electricity in 2008. Wind-generated power produced 121 GW, up 28% from the previous year. Grid-connected solar panels, the fastest growing renewable energy source, produce about 13 GW annually. Geothermal electricity, created by harnessing heat from below the Earth’s surface, produces 10 GW. All of these energy sources, as well as biomass, are becoming increasingly popular worldwide.
